This morning, via Memeorandum, I saw this headline linked to the Boston Globe. The newspaper?
Harvard Law outsider became Tea Party hero
In liberal bastion, Ted Cruz played a familiar role
Then, they printed this over the byline of Matt Viser:
CAMBRIDE — Interviews with nearly two dozen of his former classmates and professors at Harvard Law School paint a recognizable portrait of Texas Senator Ted Cruz, whom they remember as pretentious and arrogant but also as “very, very, very smart.”
So okay, I’m ready to read.
But then the editors advise me to do this:
Stay with the story. Get full access to BostonGlobe.com for just 99¢
Unlimited access to BostonGlobe.com for only 99¢ for the first 4 weeks. You can cancel at any time.
Hahahahahahahahahahahah! Stay with the story. Get it? They baited me by promising a feebly disguised hit piece on Ted Cruz, and then wanted me to pay for it. Get it?
Anyway, the headline was sort of tantalizing. How is it Ted Cruz played “a very familiar roll” as a conservative at Harvard?
Dangit, I had to go to The Blaze to get the story. For free. Dangit.
THESE ARE THE BEST PART’S OF THE BOSTON GLOBE’S TED CRUZ HARVARD-YEARS PROFILE
The Boston Globe has a look back at Republican Texas Sen. Ted Cruz‘s three years as a student at Harvard Law from 1992 to 1995. It turns out largely unremarkable, as Cruz seems to be the exact same person then that he is today. But there were two curious anecdotes worth note.
Cruz originally wanted a career in Hollywood: “In high school, he says, he considered dropping out and moving to California to pursue an acting career. His parents talked him out of it.”
He was once too hungover to play his part in a staged production of “The Crucible”: ”After the successful first performance, Cruz spent the cast party imbibing so much Everclear — a powerful grain alcohol — that he couldn’t make it through the next night’s performance. His fellow actors had to coax him into going onstage, but by Act III his condition worsened. A video of the performance shows him sitting on a bench onstage, his head buried in his hands for nearly five minutes straight. After meekly delivering a line, he walked off stage in the middle of the scene, forcing cast members to improvise around the departure of a lead character. He didn’t return for the remainder of the play.”
Oh, I get it. “…played a very familiar role.” In The Crucible. As a “very, very smart” but also kind of stupid, irresponsible conservative at Harvard.
Which anybody but the choir would be, if The Boston Globe could get them to pay to read a hit piece on Ted Cruz. I mean stupid and irresponsible, not necessarily conservative. Or at Harvard.
Get it?
Okay, never mind.
